Tesla says the Model Y L is "Available Now." We've checked every day for five weeks and there isn't one in inventory.

The Model Y L, the stretched six-seat Model Y, has been for sale on Tesla's US site for over a month. It's $61,990 for the Launch Series with 325 miles of range, and the configurator will take your order today. By August 7 Tesla's offers page was calling it "Available Now."

In all that time, not one has shown up in Tesla's national inventory. Not new, not used. Zero.

That gap, between what Tesla is selling and what Tesla actually has sitting on the ground, is the whole reason we built this watch.

July 4 — The watch goes live. Tesla's Model Y page already shows the Y L at $61,990, 325 miles, long wheelbase. National inventory: zero.

July 5 — The configurator watch confirms the orderable trim: "Model Y L Premium All-Wheel Drive – Launch Series."

July 6 — A brief signal in the listings clears within a day and the pool stays at zero. (We log our own false starts too. See the methodology note.)

July 21 — Tesla edits the price line on the Model Y page, adding a footnote to the $61,990.

July 23 — The used-inventory watch comes online. Zero Y L there either.

July 30 — Content changes on both the Model Y page and the configurator, and the configurator picks up the explicit $61,990 price line.

August 7 — The offers-page watch starts and reads Tesla's headline: "Available Now: Model Y L Premium Launch Series."

August 11 — We go through every new Model Y listed nationally. Still no six-seat configuration anywhere in it, and our controls confirm we were seeing the listings properly.

A zero is only worth publishing if it could have come back as something else, so here's how ours is built.

We look for seven different things that would give a Y L away in a listing: its trim, its option and wheel codes, how it's named, its seating configuration, and its variant. On top of that we watch for changes Tesla could make on us, like an unfamiliar trim showing up, the Y L getting its own listing category, Tesla reorganizing how it presents inventory, or a price appearing above where a standard Model Y tops out.

It also runs a control. Every scan checks the five-seat cabin filter at the same time, and that one has to come back with a healthy count. If it doesn't, the scan reports itself as blind instead of reporting "no units found." We would rather tell you we couldn't see than tell you something that isn't true.

None of this is unusual for Tesla, by the way. The current Model Y went order-only before inventory units followed. When the first Y L finally lands, the tracker page flips on its own, and this watch stops proving there's nothing and starts telling you what's there.

The watch checks five places every day: Tesla's Model Y page, the configurator, the offers page, and both its new and used national inventory listings. We only save a snapshot when something actually changes, so every date above is when we first saw it, not necessarily when Tesla did it. The "Available Now" headline, for example, was already live when that particular watch started on August 7.
