What “in inventory” means

Tesla's public inventory lists vehicles available to buy right now. A car already attached to someone's order does not appear there, so this count stays at zero while Tesla builds against the order book. A zero here does not mean none have been built or none are in transit. Vehicles typically reach inventory when an order is cancelled, a buyer declines delivery at pickup, or Tesla builds ahead of demand, and that is the most likely way the first Model Y L shows up on this page.

What the movement actually shows

Since windows began appearing in mid-August they have moved in every direction — later, earlier, narrower — sometimes on the same order within a single week. In October the picture split. Among orders reported directly on this page, more windows were pulled in than pushed out, a couple of Northeast orders being the exceptions that moved into December. Across the wider set of public holder posts, October moves went both ways and leaned later, while a number of windows tightened to a VIN and a pickup date. Orders placed after July continue to slot in behind the July queue, with windows running from December into early next year. The practical read has never changed: a date in your Tesla account is provisional until a VIN is attached, in either direction — and Tesla's own estimate in your account is the number to plan around, not this log.
